Why make your own body creams and lotions when there is such a huge range to choose from in the marketplace? Because when you make your own, you know exactly what goes into the product, and can choose exactly the ingredients and fragrances to suit your individual needs.
You need some basic supplies to begin making your own moisturizing body creams and lotions, but these are quite easy to come by. You will also need some basic utensils which you must keep specifically for making up your recipes, and a good supply of pretty bottles and jars. You can ask your friends to save their old cosmetic bottles and jars for you as well, or haunt thrift shops for containers.Basic utensils: Pyrex or glass mixing bowls, wooden spatulas, small funnels, measuring spoons. A hand held Bamix-type mixer is also handy for blending recipes, but a wooden spoon or hand operated rotary beater will do.Basic ingredients: Sorbolene cream; baby oil; Vitamin E capsules (containing oil); distilled or pure spring water; witch hazel; fine oatmeal for scrubs; essential oils in favorite fragrances such as rose, lavender, peppermint, and neroli; and a moisturizing oil such as almond or jojoba.Simple Rose and Honey Cleansing Cream: To one quarter cup of sorbolene cream, add a tablespoon of honey (warmed to liquid state), a few drops of rose essential oil, a tablespoon almond or jojoba oil, and the contents of 4-5 vitamin E oil capsules, broken open and squeezed into the mix. Beat well, and put in a pretty jar. Use the cream all over the body. The honey will protect and soothe the skin, and the vitamin E will help with scarring such as birthmarks.Refreshing Peppermint Foot Lotion: To half a cup of of plain unscented baby oil add a few drops of concentrated peppermint oil, one tablespoon each of virgin olive oil and almond oil, and shake well. Use this lotion to soothe and refresh tired feet before you go to bed. Cover your feet with cotton socks to help the oil do its work of softening heels and hard skin. If you want to put this ina pretty bottle, use a small funnel to transfer the contents.Honey, Oatmeal and Citrus Skin Refining Lotion: Soak one cup of oatmeal in distilled or spring water overnight and strain the liquid into a bowl. Keep the solids aside for making skin scrubs. To the milky liquid, add two tablespoons warmed liquid honey, the juice of one small lemon, and some orange flower water, or orange oil for fragrance. Shake well together, and apply to the skin with cotton wool pads. Keep in the fridge.Citrus Oatmeal Scrub Cream: Add the solids from the soaked oatmeal, the finely grated skin of one lemon, and a few drops of orange oil to a cup of sorbolene cream and beat well. Use as an exfoliator and scrub before a shower.Citrus Skin Cooler and Spritzer: Combine equal quantities of witch hazel and spring water (half to one cup of each) with a tablespoon of orange flower water, and a few drops of lemon oil. Keep in the fridge in a spray bottle, and use to cool and refresh the skin on hot days. You can also use peppermint oil for a refreshing mint scented spritzer which is particularly effective for cooling the feet. These are just a few recipes to get you started making your own moisturizing body creams and lotions. You will find many books and web pages on the subject that will inspire you so much that you may never buy a commercial product again!
